Pouty princess

Reasons I Suck.

Last week I got an iPhone. Today I accidentally threw it away, in a public garbage can, and then drove around College Park for an hour trying to find it before thinking to check the garbage can and all but hurl myself in bodily to retrieve it.

I dropped my McDonald's cup on top of it, of course, so it's drying out now while I hold onto the very slimmest of hopes that it might work after that. I'm so pissed at myself. I "lose" stuff at home and in my car all the time - phones are slippery and this thing is thin enough that I was SURE it had slid under a seat somewhere - but I don't really LOSE lose stuff all that often, and I sure as hell don't destroy it myself.

Meanwhile: of course, one week is apparently not too short a time to completely addict oneself to something, and I NEEEEEEEED it. The sad fact is that I will be right back in there, buying another one, if this one is completely fried. I need a phone anyway, and this is not a situation that's like to repeat itself, so fuck it.

You know what I love about Entourage?

(Besides Ari Gold, and also holy shit does Jeremy Piven look amazing or what?)

V. v. low body count.

Kids home, parents still crazy, (mostly) all right in the world.

Still mostly not here

Just... not feeling it.

But there's something we're talking about and I was wondering if anybody here had experience with it: anybody ever hosted an exchange student?

Thanks in advance for any stories you might have to tell!

Canada, my great and t00by love

Things that make me sad

This is the exact day on which Robin Sparkles stops rocking my body.

That is, haaappy Canada Day!

Hat! Scarf! Lipstick!

True confessions

It doesn't happen very often, but every once in a while I really really really want to be a drag queen. I have way, way too many glitter products that never get used. I have a container of clear, purplish fake nails that have black and grey and silver sparkly stars on them. I have multiple styles, colors, lengths of fake eyelashes. I do a mean winged eyeliner. My rack isn't impressive by fannish standards, but it's pretty. I want to be gaudy, gauche, bawdy, loud, sparkly, fabulous. At least for a few minutes.

Only, I really don't like for people to look at me. And I feel like it's wasteful to do these things just to be in my house, b/c the whole POINT of them is to be seen. You see the problem here.

Mood-altering drugs? Lots of alcohol? Getting the fuck over myself? I didn't used to dislike attention the way I do now; that attention-whore thing about my daughter that was on such blatant display last year at Dragon*con? Yeah, it's a little familiar.

Really, though? I just want to have these awesome, ridiculous plastic fingernails without feeling like a moron. Or at least like a fabulous moron.

Hiro triumphant

Best. Day. EVER. No, seriously, it might actually be my best day.

Just back from seeing the last play of the Norman Conquests and oh my god, what an amazing day. So, so much glee, and what stamina from the actors, and fantastic direction and, just - I can't tell you how happy I am. It's an entire day, and not a cheap one, but I'm just completely high on the whole experience and think everybody needs to spend seven hours in that room with those people.

And now I'm going to go sit with my squee and my husband and my cookies. :D :D :D :D

Sci Fi Rules

(no subject)

Who's setting themselves up to have their heart broken by Fox again watching Virtuality? Yeah, it's a Ron Moore production (and I'll never trust HIM again) but Peter Berg (of FNL) is directing! 3, count em *3* people of color in space! (I think it's apparent the cast was assembled with an eye to diversity, in a thank-you-for-paying-attention kind of way; there's also a gay couple who appear to be having an actual relationship with each other and a dude in a wheelchair.) So far it looks pretty good, which means it probably won't last long, so catch it while you can.

In NYC, eating Cosi, having a quiet night in. Took the bus up this afternoon and it was a full bus but a generally quiet ride; the tunnel traffic alone was enough to make me v. glad I wasn't driving.

I think I've forgotten how to do this - it's like my blogger is broken or something. *pokes at it*

So, in lieu of actual content, have an Elvis Costello track that's been stuck in my head for days: "After the Fall", on Sendspace.

Also: everybody all set up for D*Con rooms? We have 2 reserved that we won't be using and I'm ready to go ahead and release them if nobody's going to need them.

The kids are in Texas and Marc & I are headed to NYC tomorrow afternoon for a quick theatre trip; 4 plays in 2 days, although three of them are a trilogy that we'll be catching all in one day. It's a tight trip and I don't anticipate leaving midtown, but is anybody in the mood to try to run in and have a quick meal with us at some point?

Go!

meh, I'll unpack tomorrow

Home from what I would call an incredibly harrowing trip if there hadn't been a fatal accident on my Metro line today; sort of shifts perspective on a lot of things. (And here's one of them: it's official, DC has become Home. I REALLY didn't like being in the airport in Houston and trying to figure out what was going on here.)

Looks like everybody is all checked in, and if you haven't heard from someone, keep in mind that this was (a) toward the end of the eastern Wheaton/Silver Spring side of the line (v. high fangirl density around the Silver Spring Metro station) and; (b) INbound at 5 pm - unless the person you haven't heard from was likely to be heading into the District at that time of day from someplace like Glenmont or Silver Spring, try not to get yourself tied into knots.

And now there will be sleeping time. I'm so glad to be home. *passes out*

Rainy hearts

Just passing it along

Just talked to [info - personal]longtimegone, who was admitted to the hospital last night (apparently there was an ambulance involved, because Kristen likes to do everything up proper) with serious back spasms. It sounds like it's "just" muscular and when we hung up it was because an orthopedist was due there to inject steroids directly into her back, so it's not been the most fun several days for her, but she's on good drugs now and her parents are taking good care of her. I guess what I'm saying is, don't worryworry, but feel free to send her lots of love. And fic - she's going to be laid up for a while.

I rule!

P.S. re. Gilmore Girls (still really working no srsly)

I just want to take this opportunity to point out that I have been slashing Paris and Rory (Paris is my favorite character - I love her so much!) since the v. first scene they were in together, and we have just reached the spring break episode of S4.

Baby's First Fan Letter

Dear people who made Avatar:

Will you make book 4 air, pleas? p.s. big fan I wachd all three books 5 hole times.

Sunserly
(A's real name)

So, yeah, her spelling still really sucks, but she does love Avatar. They don't really watch TV, they just watch Avatar over and over again.

I haven't really posted in a while and I won't be here for a while longer - I've got a big report due Monday and then the last day of school for the kids is Tuesday and then we're headed out of town on Wednesday. I owe many email and post responses but I'm likely going to continue to be head down for a while. ♥

Beer is addicted to me!

Breaking pretty much every prohibition against talking about money, EVER. Look away, jlh.

There's that [info]frugal_fans comm over on LJ, but it looks pretty much dead. Is there anything else like that up and running anywhere? I was reading about savings clubs here, and I was thinking about how useful/precarious something like that might be on LJ/DW - attention paid to finances as part of the social contract here. I'm also interested in talking or reading about personal finance but not in a "what is my best investment" kind of way - more money/lifestyle/class/personal-best-life/yadda yadda issues. Anybody have any great place to recommend?

Cooking

Lots and lots and lots of vegetable cornbread?

First CSA delivery of the year; lambsquarters, garlic scapes, fava beans, lettuces and radishes and chard. And also a bunch of green onions that have to be 4 feet tall - I had just brought home [info]longtimegone from the airport and they reach from the floor to her armpit, and she's 5'8". Anybody have any idea wtf I can do with 20 linear feet of green onions?

In need of a "history of the intarwebz" primer

Looking for the root of the "GQ motherfuckers" meme, as recently hugely popularized on ontd_startrek. Roots/origins/early examples? Thoughts?

Male back

I am late to the game with the NuKirk icons. Hook a girl up?

[info] - personallongtimegone: http://community.livejournal.com/ontd_startrek/112859.html?mode=reply&style=mine
there's your daily dose of Capt Fine getting a latte

[info] - personalwordplay: I love how it looks like he's about to burst out of his shirt

[info] - personallongtimegone: it's hard being that hot
even your clothes want to undress you

[info] - personalwordplay: SHIRT: I am a conscientious objector! Don't make me do this!

[info] - personallongtimegone: :))
Mmmmm pretty
is that a CAMO GYM BAG?

[info] - personalwordplay: well, at least now you know who to mail your clapotis to?

[info] - personallongtimegone: AHAHAHHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAA

[info] - personalwordplay: actually, he's just metro enough to pull it off
thumbsz up

[info] - personallongtimegone: :))

[info] - personalwordplay: dooooo iiiiiiit

[info] - personallongtimegone: he totally is
how hilarious would that be
"Dear Captain Fine,
I loved you as Kirk
and seeing your creepy pap pics each day as you got your daily latte in your too tight in the crotch jeans, carrying your camouflage gym bag totally inspired me to knit this for you. Live long and hotly. Love, Kristen"

[info] - personalwordplay: A is asking me why I'm laughing with my mouth full
you know, Kristen
it's almost like kismet
serendipity, even

[info] - personallongtimegone: ahahaahaha oh A
YES
I mean, I almost!knit a camo clapotis, and he carries a camo gym bag
IT WAS WRITTEN IN THE STARSZ

[info] - personalwordplay: you're totally MFEO

[info] - personallongtimegone: well, duh
someone one the comm suggested we start calling him Capt Bulge
approvesz

[info] - personalwordplay: well, which is not unreasonable
at all
but loses some of the ridiculous of the whole thing and goes straight to the dirty

[info] - personallongtimegone: really. I stare at his crotch more than his face I feel

(usernotes: the z-after-s thing is an ill-advised private joke. Also, for this to be really funny, you need backstory: Kristen started knitting this really sort-of-ridiculously-popular scarf pattern, the Clapotis, in some gorgeous muted green Manos, which knitted up looking pretty much exactly like camo. Because Kristen is from Alabama and the whole sales pitch of the Clapotis is that it's supposed to be all high-fashiony French, I have not stopped mocking her for this, even though it's been almost a year, because I am kind of a jerk like that.

ETA: Now with v. exciting, super-hot automobile/key action!

GA - Just trying to survive

(no subject)

Have watched the first 13 episodes of "Gilmore Girls" while on my deathsickbed today, and (a) yes, absolutely adorable and perfect for a sick day; and (b) I had to import some old XTC records immediately. What an odd band for them to use so often!

Thanks to those who've talked the show up. <3
